American Pepper Steak

➡️ If you wondering what’s an American pepper steak recipe, read below for more information about this topic. Simply said, pepper steak is a traditional Chinese-American dish consisting of beef, which is thinly sliced and then coated in a flavored pepper sauce.

➡️ The dish is very simple and easy to prepare and can be used as a main course, an appetizer, or a snack. It’s a popular dish throughout the United States and is often served at grill parties. When I’m in the mood for a hearty and flavorful meal, I love making Authentic American Pepper Steak. This dish is made with thinly sliced beef, sautéed onions and peppers, and a savory sauce made with Worcestershire or BBQ sauce.

➡️ To make sure the beef is tender, I always choose a tender cut of meat like flank steak or sirloin and slice it against the grain. This helps to break down the muscle fibers and makes it easier to chew. When cooking the onions and peppers, I sauté them until they are tender and caramelized, being careful not to overcook them. Overcooking can cause them to become mushy and lose their flavor.

➡️ Because not everyone in my family likes soy sauce (or you simply don’t have soy sauce on hand), I use Worcestershire or BBQ sauce instead. Both of these sauces add a unique flavor to the dish while still keeping it delicious.

➡️ To serve, I like to place the pepper steak over a bed of rice or noodles. This helps to soak up the flavorful sauce and make the dish more filling. Brown rice or whole wheat noodles are great options for a healthier meal. Whatever your choice for the side dish, the Authentic American Pepper Steak is a comforting and satisfying dish that’s perfect for any occasion.

➡️ Because cooking this stir-fry recipe doesn’t take much time, it’s a common substitute for beef stew or when you have the time to cook other beef recipes over low heat for hours on end! Learn more below about cooking the American pepper steak recipe! 👌

Authentic American Pepper Steak

Authentic American Pepper Steak is a classic dish that has been enjoyed by many for decades. This dish is made with tender strips of beef, sautéed onions, and green bell peppers, which are then coated in a savory sauce made with Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce, beef broth, and cornstarch. The dish is typically served over a bed of rice or noodles, making it a satisfying and filling meal.
One of the key components of this dish is the beef. It's important to choose a tender cut of beef that will be easy to slice into strips. Flank steak or sirloin are both great options for this dish. The onions and peppers are sautéed until they are tender and caramelized, which adds a delicious sweetness to the dish.
The sauce is what brings this dish together. Soy sauce, which is usually the primary ingredient, is replaced with Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce because they give the dish a more American-style savory flavor. Beef broth adds richness and depth of flavor, while cornstarch is used as a thickener to create a glossy and luscious sauce.
When preparing Authentic American Pepper Steak, it's important to have all the ingredients ready before you start cooking. This will ensure that the cooking process is smooth and efficient. Additionally, the beef should be sliced against the grain, which will help to make it tender and easy to chew.
Authentic American Pepper Steak is a delicious and hearty meal that's perfect for any occasion. Whether you're cooking for your family or entertaining guests, this dish is sure to impress. The combination of tender beef, sautéed onions and peppers, and savory sauce is simply irresistible.

Ingredients

  • 22 oz flanken steak or another beef cut like sirloin, boneless neck, and clod
  • 11 oz green bell peppers
  • 11 oz red bell peppers
  • 11 oz yellow onions
  • 1/2 tbsp grated fresh ginger or 1 tbsp of ginger powder
  • some salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 3.5 fl oz sunflower oil or another vegetable oil type with a neutral aroma
  • 17 fl oz beef stock or water
  • 3 tbsp Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1-2 tbsp cornstarch or as needed

Instructions

  • Take out the beef from the fridge and cut it thinly into slices of about 0,5 cm/0,2 inches.
  • Remove the stub and seeds from the bell peppers, then chop them coarsely.
  • Peel the onions, then chop them also coarsely.
  • Grate de ginger if used, skip over this step if you’re using ginger powder.
  • In the meantime, cook the beef stock or heat it up if you already have it at hand.
  • Pour the oil into a large pan at high temperature, then add the chopped peppers and onions and fry them until slightly softened (about 5 minutes).
  • When ready, remove the vegetables from the pan while draining well of the oil and set aside.
  • Add the flanken steak pieces to the pan and fry them, stirring occasionally until lightly browned (about 5 minutes).
  • When the beef is browned, place the fried vegetables back into the pan and mix ingredients.
  • Next, pour the hot beef stock into the pan so as to cover the ingredients almost completely.
  • Season the ingredients with some salt and ground black pepper to taste and add the ginger to the pan.
  • Put the lid on the pan, lower the temperature and cook the ingredients for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • When the beef is tender, place the Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce into a small bowl, add the honey, then sprinkle the cornstarch while stirring the ingredients. If necessary, pour a bit of hot water to liquefy the mixture.
  • Remove the lid, pour the previously prepared mixture, mix the ingredients and continue boiling for 3-5 minutes or until the dish thickens a little.
  • When ready, split the American pepper steak into plates and serve it while hot straight as it is or with a side dish of your choice (see below for some suggestions).

Notes

Cooking Tips:
  1. Use a tender cut of beef: Since the beef in this recipe is sliced thinly, it’s important to choose a cut of meat that will be tender and easy to chew. Flank steak or sirloin are great options for this dish.
  2. Slice the beef against the grain: Slicing the beef against the grain will help to make it more tender and easy to chew. This is because the grain of the meat is made up of muscle fibers, which can be tough if sliced the wrong way.
  3. Don’t overcook the vegetables: The onions and peppers should be sautéed until they are tender and caramelized, but be careful not to overcook them. Overcooking the vegetables can cause them to become mushy and lose their flavor.
  4. Use Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce instead of soy sauce: If you don’t have soy sauce on hand or prefer a different flavor, Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce can be used instead. Both of these sauces will give the dish a slightly different flavor, but will still be delicious.
  5. Serve over rice or noodles: Authentic American Pepper Steak is typically served over a bed of rice or noodles. This helps to soak up the delicious sauce and makes the dish more filling. Try serving it over brown rice or whole wheat noodles for a healthier option.

Final Notes for the American Pepper Steak Recipe

  • cutting the meat while it’s cold helps you cut thin and whole slices because, after it heats up, it becomes flabby and even harder to work with.
  • the flanken steak is the best cut for the American pepper steak recipe, however, you can use other types of meat like sirloin and round
  • any type of bell peppers can be used for this recipe if you like spicy food you can add also 1-2 chili peppers among the ingredients.
  • stir fry recipes usually do not include simmering the ingredients in liquid, but I recommend this step to get a very tender and juicy beef and a rich pepper sauce.
  • for even more flavor, you can sprinkle some chopped parsley or coriander leaves on top of the pepper steak.
  • serve the American pepper steak over a layer of boiled rice, boiled potatoes, or even boiled pasta.
