Typically, pepper steak recipes include soy sauce as one of the main ingredients. Nevertheless, not everyone likes this Asian flavor, so I was in need to adapt this beef stir-fry recipe to become more pleasant for Americans.

The result is this easy American pepper stake recipe that I and my family like very much, hence, I cook it pretty often and especially in the season when ripe bell peppers are abundant in the farm markets.

Below are listed the needed ingredients and the cooking methods for my American pepper steak recipe.

Sliced Flanken Steak

1) 600 g/22 oz of flanken steak or another beef cut like sirloin, boneless neck, and clod
2) 300 g/11 oz of green bell peppers
3) 300 g/11 oz of red bell peppers
4) 300 g/11 oz of yellow onions
5) 1/2 tbsp of grated fresh ginger or 1 tbsp of ginger powder
6) some salt and ground black pepper to taste
7) 100 ml/3.5 fl oz of sunflower oil or another vegetable oil type with a neutral aroma
8) 500 ml/17 fl oz of beef stock or water
9) 3 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce
10) 1 tbsp of honey
11) 1-2 tbsp of cornstarch or as needed

Easy American Pepper Steak Recipe

➡️ How to cook pepper steak the American way?

Total Time: 50 minutes

1) Cut the flanken steak thinly

Take out the beef from the fridge and cut it thinly into slices of about 0,5 cm/0,2 inches.

2) Prepare bell peppers for cooking

Remove the stub and seeds from the bell peppers, then chop them coarsely.

3) Peel and chop the onions

Peel the onions, then chop them also coarsely.

4) Grate the fresh ginger if used

Grate de ginger if used, skip over this step if you’re using ginger powder.

5) Cook or heat up the beef stock

In the meantime, cook the beef stock or heat it up if you already have it at hand.

6) Pour oil into the pan, heat it up, and cook the vegetables

Pour the oil into a large pan at high temperature, then add the chopped peppers and onions and fry them until slightly softened (about 5 minutes).

7) Remove vegetables from the pan

When ready, remove the vegetables from the pan while draining well of the oil and set aside.

8) Fry the flanken steak pieces

Add the flanken steak pieces to the pan and fry them, stirring occasionally until lightly browned (about 5 minutes).

9) Place back vegetables into the pan

When the beef is browned, place the fried vegetables back into the pan and mix ingredients.

10) Pour the stock into the pan

Next, pour the hot beef stock into the pan so as to cover the ingredients almost completely.

11) Season the ingredients

Season the ingredients with some salt and ground black pepper to taste and add the ginger to the pan.

12) Simmer the ingredients

Put the lid on the pan, lower the temperature and cook the ingredients for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

13) Prepare the final sauce

When the beef is tender, place the Worcestershire sauce or BBQ sauce into a small bowl, add the honey, then sprinkle the cornstarch while stirring the ingredients. If necessary, pour a bit of hot water to liquefy the mixture.

14) Complete the American pepper steak recipe

Remove the lid, pour the previously prepared mixture, mix the ingredients and continue boiling for 3-5 minutes or until the dish thickens a little.

15) Serve the dish immediately

When ready, split the American pepper steak into plates and serve it while hot straight as it is or with a side dish of your choice (see below for some suggestions).
