Homemade Bean and Bacon Soup

➡️ Who doesn’t love bean soup and bacon? Beans and bacon are a classic combination. The earthy character of the beans is balanced by the salinity of the bacon, making them an excellent ingredient for soup. This type of soup is traditional in many European countries, especially the Nordic ones, but also in the United States and Canada.

➡️ The cold weather and the widespread use of pork as a staple food certainly contributed to the popularity of this soup. Also, dried beans have been one of the foods that have been the basis of European gastronomy ever since it was introduced to this continent in the late Middle Ages. Even if the classic recipe requires white beans, actually you can use any bean type in this soup, such as black, pinto, or cannellini.

➡️ I am a big fan of bacon so I often use it in my culinary creations and the bean and bacon soup recipe is perfect for this purpose! The type of bacon you use will make a difference in the flavor, so if you can, use a smokier, less-processed variety for an enhanced soup aroma. Homemade Bean and Bacon Soup

➡️ Eager to know how to cook bean and bacon soup? The recipe is very tasty and easy to cook, so I wholeheartedly recommend it! Below are listed the steps required to cook my homemade bean and bacon soup recipe.

Total Time: 1 hour and 15 minutes

1) Boil the beans until half cooked

Place the beans into a pot, fill it up with water and boil the beans over a medium temperature until half cooked, then drain them completely (about 30 minutes).
If you’re using canned beans, open the cans, drain the liquid completely and rinse the beans very well.

2) Trim and fry the bacon

In the meantime, dice the bacon into small pieces, pour oil into a pan, and fry the bacon over a medium-high temperature until crunchy. Use a lid on the pan to avoid being splashed with hot oil!
When ready, remove the bacon from the pan, drain it well, and set it aside.

3) Prepare the veggies for cooking

Peel and chop the carrots, onions, and garlic finely, then chop the celery ribs as well.

4) Simmer the veggies

Place the veggies in the same pan that you used for bacon and simmer them over a low temperature until slightly soft (about 5 minutes or so).

5) Place the veggies into the pot and start boiling the soup

After you drained the beans, place the softened veggies over them, then open the tomato can and pour the content over the other ingredients.
Pour the pot with lukewarm water so that it covers the veggies, season with some salt, and boil the soup for about 15 minutes at a low temperature.

6) Add the fried bacon to the pot

Add the bacon to the pan and continue boiling the soup for about 30 minutes or until the bean is very tender and begins to crush. Pour a bit of hot water if needed.

7) Complete the bean and bacon soup

Grind some black pepper into the soup when ready, then chop the parsley leaves and sprinkle them over the soup when serving it.

6 PRO Tips for the Homemade Bean and Bacon Soup Recipe

  • If you use dried beans for the recipe, put them in cold water the night before; this will cause the beans to partially rehydrate and boil faster
  • Do not cut the bacon into too small cubes so that it does not burn when fried
  • Instead of water, you can use beef broth or chicken broth for a more complex flavor
  • Even before the soup is ready, you can add 1-2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar for an even more refined flavor
  • If you like spicy food, you can sprinkle a little hot chili pepper powder over the soup when serving
  • If the soup is not thick enough, you can add a tablespoon of heavy cream to each plate
