Easy Sausage Rolls with Puff Pastry

One of my favorite party appetizers is this easy sausage rolls recipe. Not only are these party snacks ready very quickly, but they also require a few ingredients that are easy to find in any grocery store. Of course, their taste is excellent, so I have to make a lot of sausage rolls when I prepare finger foods for the party!

You may have found different versions of this cold appetizers recipe, some British, some Australian, or from other parts of the world. On this page, I share a delicacy called sausage rolls with puff pastry. Sausage rolls have been a popular snack since the early 20th century and can be found in bakeries and supermarkets across the world. They are especially popular among British and Australians.

The history of the sausage roll is somewhat unclear, but it is thought to have originated in the United Kingdom. The first sausage rolls were made from a small amount of sausage meat wrapped in a small amount of dough and were designed to be baked. Since then, lots of recipes were invented with different ingredients and flavors.

Smoked Sausage Kielbasa

1) 400 g/14 oz of puff pastry dough
2) 250 g/9 oz of smoked sausages like Kielbasa or another similar sausage type
3) some coarse salt and ground black pepper
4) 1/2 tsp of Provence spice mix
5) 1 egg

Below are listed the steps required to make this easy sausage rolls recipe.

Total Time: 30 minutes

1) Prepare the puff pastry dough for filling up

Unpack the dough and spread the sheets on a flat surface.

2) Season the dough

Season the dough with the Provence spice mixture, salt, and ground black pepper to taste considering that the smoked sausage is already seasoned.

3) Place the sausage over the dough sheets

Place a piece of smoked sausage on top of each dough sheet so that it is closer to an edge.

4) Roll up the dough sheet and sausage together

Roll the dough sheet together with the sausage from the side where the sausage is close to the edge so that the sausage is completely coated with dough. Press the dough to make an edge, then cut it along the sausage.

5) Continue with the rest of the sausage

Do the same with the rest of the sausages.

6) Cut small rolls

Cut each large roll into smaller pieces so that their size fits for 1-2 bites.

7) Brush the sausage rolls with beaten egg

Break the egg, beat it up with a fork, then brush the top of the sausage rolls.

8) Place the sausage rolls on a tray

Place all sausage rolls on a baking paper-coated tray, then sprinkle over a bit of coarse salt (optional).

9) Put the tray in the oven

Put the tray in the preheated oven at 220C/430F, then reduce the temperature to 180C/360F.

10) Bake the sausage rolls until golden

Bake these easy sausage rolls for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown, then take them out and wait to cool before serving.

  • use an assortment of lightly smoked sausages, the taste of too strong smoke will not be appreciated by many people
  • keep the dough in the fridge until you start using it, so it will remain firm and easy to work with
  • if you don’t like Provence spices or you don’t have them at hand, you can use other flavors, for example, I sometimes use cumin, coriander, or thyme powder with equally good results
  • you can also brush the dough sheet with a very thin layer of ketchup if you want to add a tomato taste to the appetizer
  • similar to ketchup, you can sprinkle a thin layer of grated cheese over the dough sheet before putting the sausages
  • for a spicier taste, you can replace the black pepper with hot chili powder, but keep in mind that not everyone likes the very hot taste
  • after brushing the puff pastry rolls with beaten egg, instead of salt, you can sprinkle cumin or sesame seeds for an extra flavor
  • although this cold appetizer can be prepared in advance, I do not recommend making them overnight because the dough dries too hard and becomes quite unpleasant to taste
