Ham and Pineapple Pizza

The classic combination of ham and pineapple is a hit that never goes out of style. This ham and pineapple pizza recipe takes the sweetness of juicy pineapple and balances it with savory ham, fragrant basil, and nutty Parmesan cheese. Spring onions add a subtle crunch and a touch of sharpness, making this Hawaiian pizza recipe a flavor-packed treat for pizza lovers everywhere.
The juicy chunks of pineapple are the stars of this recipe, complemented perfectly by the salty, tender ham. The aromatic basil and nutty Parmesan cheese add an extra layer of complexity to this pizza's flavor profile, while the spring onions provide a pop of freshness.
To make this delicious pizza, start with a classic pizza crust, that I use without tomato sauce in the classic Italian white pizza style. Just top the dough with sliced ham and pineapple chunks or slices, followed by chopped spring onions and a sprinkle of fresh basil. Finish with a generous sprinkling of grated Parmesan cheese.
One of the best things about this ham and pineapple recipe known also as Hawaiian pizza is how versatile it is. You can add your own twists and variations to suit your taste. For instance, you can add tomato sauce, as well as mushrooms, olives, or bell peppers to the toppings for an extra kick of flavor. You can also experiment with different cheeses or spices to create your own unique version of this classic pizza.

  • 1 oz fresh yeast
  • 7 fl oz water at room temperature
  • 10 oz all-purpose flour (to make dough for 1 large pizza) + some extra flour
  • some olive oil
  • 9 oz sliced or cubed canned pineapple, drained
  • 9 oz ham, cut into thin strips

  • oregano and/or basil leaves (you can use also dried spices)
  • 9 oz grated Parmesan or other cheese types by taste

Instructions

  • put yeast into the water, cover the pot and wait 5-10 minutes to activate the yeast

  • put a little flour on top, cover the pot and wait 40-60 minutes to leaven the dough, depending on the room temperature

  • place the ham over dough into a layer
  • sprinkle over ham the spring onions
  • place over onions the pineapple slices or cubes
  • sprinkle over the pizza some dried or fresh basil and oregano leaves
  • top the Hawaiian pizza with a layer of grated Parmesan

  • remove the pizza from the oven and wait 10 minutes before serving (recommended)

Notes

Cooking Tips:
  • Preheat your oven to the highest temperature possible before baking the pizza. This will ensure that the pizza cooks evenly and the crust becomes crispy.
  • Use fresh, high-quality ingredients for the toppings, especially the ham and pineapple. Fresh pineapple will give the pizza a sweet, juicy flavor, while high-quality ham will add a rich, salty taste.
  • If using, spread the tomato sauce evenly over the pizza crust, leaving a small border around the edges to create a crispy crust.
  • Don’t overload the pizza with toppings, as this can make the crust soggy. Instead, use a light hand when adding the ham, pineapple, and other toppings.
  • Let the pizza cool for a few minutes before slicing and serving. This will allow the cheese to set and the toppings to settle, making it easier to cut and enjoy.

Final Notes for the Homemade Ham and Pineapple Pizza Recipe

➡️ Pizza is today among the most popular food recipes all over the world. There are hundreds of pizza recipes. Some of them are traditional recipes from Italy, the country where pizza was made for the first time (at least, Italian say that!). However, there are many pizza recipes that were made in other countries for the first time. Such an example is Hawaiian pizza.

➡️ Do you think the recipe on this page is from the Hawaiian Islands? No, it seems that the pineapple pizza type comes from Ontario, Canada. The Greek-Canadian Sam Panopoulos is considered its inventor in 1962. He called it Hawaiian Pizza because it sounds exotic and attracts more customers.

➡️ Most pizza recipes use tomato sauce to brush the dough before adding toppings. This homemade pineapple pizza recipe doesn’t use this technique, instead, I recommend adding bought or homemade tomato sauce or ketchup on top when the pizza is ready.

➡️ There are two main reasons why I recommend not brushing the crust with tomato sauce before baking. First, the pizza base will turn crunchy and fluffy at the same time. Second, there are people who don’t like the tomato taste on the pizza and want to enjoy a pizza recipe without tomato sauce.

➡️ Besides the mentioned ones, you can add more toppings to this homemade pizza such as mushrooms, red pepper slices, chili pepper slices, olives, and so on.
