  • a raw cabbage head, white or red (purple)

Instructions

  • remove withered outer leaves from the cabbage head if necessary.
  • cut the cabbage head in two halves through the middle of the stub.
  • cut the stub out from each cabbage half, then cut each piece into two halves again to get quarters if the cabbage is too large.
  • wedge cabbage halves or quarters right near your fingers just like in the video to get cabbage strips of the desired thickness (actually, your fingers should guide the knife blade and determine the thickness of the wedges).
  • continue in the same way until the whole cabbage is wedged.

Working Tips for the Best Results:

1. Use a Sharp Knife: Begin with a sharp chef’s knife. A sharp blade makes clean cuts and ensures precision when working with cabbage.
2. Start with a Firm Cabbage Head: Choose a firm and fresh cabbage head. A cabbage that feels heavy for its size and has crisp leaves will yield the best results. Remove any wilted or damaged outer leaves before cutting.
3. Secure the Cabbage: To prevent slipping and ensure safety, cut a thin slice from the bottom of the cabbage head to create a flat base. This will help stabilize the cabbage while you work.
4. Consistent Sizing: Determine the desired size for your cabbage strips or wedges and aim for consistency. For uniform strips, cut the cabbage in half and then slice each half into even strips. For wedges, quarter the cabbage and cut each quarter into wedges of equal size.
5. Mindful Technique: Pay attention to your cutting technique. When slicing, use a smooth, fluid motion to avoid crushing the cabbage. For wedges, angle your knife and make clean, deliberate cuts to create even-sized pieces.

Final Notes about Cutting Cabbage into Wedges and Strips

➡️ It looks very easy to make, doesn’t so? Yes, it’s really simple to wedge a cabbage, but you still have to learn some basics about how to cut cabbage correctly. Here are a few cooking tips to remember when you learn how to cut cabbage into wedges:

  • remove the old withered leaves before chopping, you don’t want to eat them, aren’t you?
  • use just a very sharp knife, this is one of the golden rules in the kitchen, doesn’t matter what are you going to cut
  • use a knife with a wide blade, you’ll work much easier and faster
  • use a large chopper to avoid cutting other things around than cabbage
  • hold the cabbage chunks very firm and press them to the chopper when you wedge, if the blade slides a little you can cut yourself pretty bad
  • control strictly the thickness of the cabbage wedges with your fingers by making cuts straight in front of them
  • choose right the thickness of the cabbage strips – medium-sized for mixed vegetable salad, stew, or stir fry, very thin for coleslaw (this is just a recommendation, you can wedge or chop the cabbage any way you like…)
