Poppy seed cakes are extremely popular in Central and Eastern Europe but also in the Germanic area of Western Europe. Therefore, in these regions there are many traditional cake recipes that contain this ingredient.
Having both Hungarian and German roots, as a child I was pampered with many homemade cakes filled with poppy seeds. Of these, some of you have probably heard of the German poppy seed roll called Mohnstrizen, which is also known as beigli in Hungary and other Central European countries.
Another very tasty recipe with poppy seed filling is the one I present to you on this page, Mohnkuchen. It has Austrian origins and was taken over in many countries that were included in the Habsburg Empire.
In fact, it’s a poppy seed pie that has a frail dough prepared with butter and a simple filling with poppy seeds. This poppy seed cake recipe doesn’t pose any difficulty for people who have a minimum experience of baking homemade cakes.
Even those with less experience can bake this pie if they follow the recipe step by step, as described in both the video and the page.
Like many other traditional homemade cakes, this poppy seed cake recipe is very tasty and keeps remains frail for a few days. In fact, the cake is perfect the day after baking because the dough has time to become tender and the filling to mature its taste.
The only problem with this poppy seed cake recipe is that it tastes too delicious and therefore disappears very quickly from the plate!
