➡️ What is bolognese sauce? ❓

Did You Know That?

“Bolognese sauce is a meat-based sauce in Italian cuisine, typical of the city of Bologna. It is customarily used to dress tagliatelle al ragù and to prepare lasagne alla bolognese.
Genuine ragù alla bolognese is a slowly cooked meat-based sauce, and its preparation involves several techniques, including sweating, sautéing, and braising. Ingredients include a characteristic soffritto of onion, celery, and carrot, different types of minced or finely chopped beef, often alongside small amounts of fatty pork. White wine, milk, and a small amount of tomato paste or tomatoes are added, and the dish is then gently simmered at length to produce a thick sauce.
Outside Italy, the phrase “Bolognese sauce” is often used to refer to a tomato-based sauce to which minced meat has been added; such sauces typically bear little resemblance to the Italian ragù alla bolognese, being more similar in fact to the ragù alla napoletana from the tomato-rich south of the country. Although in Italy ragù alla bolognese is not used with spaghetti, but rather with flat pasta, particularly tagliatelle,[2][3][4] so-called “spaghetti bolognese” has become a popular dish in many parts of the world.
Nowadays, there are many variations of the recipe even among native Italian chefs,[13][14][15] and the repertoire has been further broadened by some American chefs known for their expertise in Italian cuisine.[16]
Spaghetti bolognese
Spaghetti bolognese (sometimes called spaghetti alla bolognese) is a pasta dish that is popular outside Italy, but not part of traditional Bolognese or even Italian cuisine in general.[23][24] The dish is generally perceived as inauthentic when encountered by Italians abroad.[3][4][25][26]
It consists of spaghetti served with a sauce made from tomatoes, ground beef, garlic, wine, and herbs; sometimes ground beef can be replaced by other minced meats. In this sense, the sauce is actually more similar to Neapolitan ragù from the south of Italy than the northern Bolognese version of ragù.”

➡️ Cooking tips for the basic spaghetti Bolognese recipe 🔎

Pasta with sauce is certainly one of the most popular food recipes.

This spaghetti bolognese recipe with minced meat and tomato sauce is not the original version of pasta Bolognese with ragu sauce that is prepared traditionally in Italy, but is a modern version, adapted with fewer ingredients and shorter cooking time, loved and cooked by everyone all over the world. Today, it’s considered the best spaghetti Bolognese recipe!

Even in Italy, few places still serve the original version of pasta Bolognese with tagliatelle and ragu sauce!

The amount of Bolognese sauce per serving differs depending on your preferences (usually 1-2 ladles). However, if you cook too much sauce with minced meat and tomatoes do not worry, it can be used the next day to prepare Bolognese pasta bake, Bolognese calzone, or it can be frozen and used later.

Regarding the meat used to cook this pasta Bolognese recipe, the most suitable is pork, namely ground pork shoulder. Another cut that can be used, even if it’s drier, is ground fresh pork ham.

Sometimes I use a mixture of ground pork and ground beef in a proportion of 60%-40%. Of course, you can adapt these proportions according to your personal taste.

The best cheese to top pasta Bolognese is a hard Italian cheese such as Pecorino or Parmesan. Needless to say, if you don’t have at hand these Italian cheese types you can use any ground cheese you like.

Next to the best spaghetti Bolognese recipe, the most suitable drink is red wine.
