Fresh Spinach Salad Dressing

➡️ For me, the start of spring is always accompanied by the beginning of spinach salad season. It stretches throughout the summer because spinach likes heat, even if not excessive, and if we irrigate the garden we have a chance of rich spinach harvests until late summer. So, it’s time to get your spinach recipes out and make as many healthy and nutritious salads as possible.

➡️ Even if you can make spinach salads in which the leaves are cooked (for example, simmered in butter or dipped in hot water), most spinach salad recipes are calling for raw spinach leaves. And the latter, obviously, needs a tasty salad dressing that binds the spinach to the other ingredients you’re going to use.

➡️ You may know that many spinach salad dressings are based on vinegar. I recently wrote two articles about balsamic vinaigrette and red wine vinaigrette. I recommend you read it because both types of salad dressings go very well with raw spinach. There are also many spinach salad dressing recipes based on lemon juice, most of which are of Mediterranean origin. Other typical ingredients for spinach salad dressings include Dijon mustard, garlic, honey, and salt and pepper.

Making Spinach Salad Dressings Is A Breeze!

➡️ Needless to say, spinach salads are made all over the world where spinach grows, including in the Middle East and Asia. In these areas, salad dressings contain ingredients that are less common for Europeans and North Americans such as curry powder, ground cumin, rice vinegar, soy sauce, sesame oil, fresh ginger, and extra spicy hot chili peppers.

➡️ As such, in addition to the dressings based on vinegar or lemon that you are used to, I recommend you widen your culinary horizons and prepare spinach salads with more personality and rich aromas of exotic origin. You will definitely not regret it because any spinach salad dressing packed with many flavors is delicious and, in addition, easy to make.

➡️ Finally, I must mention that there are also more complex spinach salads available that are made as a snack or even for a frugal lunch or dinner. They contain more substantial ingredients such as fried bacon, boiled eggs, or sauteed mushrooms and in this case, the dressing must be adapted to match all the ingredients, not just the spinach.

In this installment of our series on foods of the African diaspora, Jessica B. Harris celebrates her love for salads and one of her tastes of home. East or West, sometimes home is best.

Such is the case with my diaspora dining. Sometimes, it’s just time to take a small step back from the world to savor the world that is right at my fingertips. It may seem strange to be talking about the foods of a home after our long period of enforced homestay, but now that I am back on the road—in London, actually—I find myself wishing for my kitchen and the ability to throw together a quick meal from what I have.[…]

I don’t remember where or when I learned how to prepare this wilted spinach salad, but its simplicity is part of its charm. The bacon is fried to render the fat, which is[…]
