➡️ What is an upside-down cake? ❓

Did You Know That?

An upside-down cake is a cake that is assembled in a pan and then inverted on a plate. The goal is to have the cake look like it is sitting on top of the plate.
Upside-down cakes are a delicious treat but can be pretty difficult to make. While there are a number of different ways to make upside-down cakes, there are two main types of upside-down cakes: ones that use a traditional sponge or one that uses a quick cake mix.
The former takes a lot longer to prepare and often requires the use of a stand mixer, while the latter is much quicker to put together and can be made using a hand mixer or even a potato masher.
The type of cake used will also determine the consistency and flavor of the cake once flipped.
The traditional upside-down cake uses layers of cake, cream, and/or fruit, and then is turned upside down so that the sweet stuff is on top and the crust is on the bottom.
The modern upside-down cake uses a cake batter and then stacks pieces of cake, fruit, or cookies on top of each other to create the structure of the traditional upside-down cake, but the sweet stuff is on the top so that the crust is on the bottom.

➡️ Baking tips for the upside-down plum cake recipe 🔎

Upside-down cakes are especially appreciated when featuring fresh fruit. This is not surprising since the combination of fruit juice and caramelized sugar results in a very delicious layer on the top of the cake.

There are different fruits used to bake an upside-down cake, the most common being apple. However, I like this type of homemade fruit cake with other fruits as well and one of my preferred cakes is the plum upside-down cake.

Making this recipe is easy even if you could think the opposite at first glance. Overturning the tray is not as difficult as it seems, you just have to work carefully and slowly.

The best advice I can give you is to wait enough before slicing the cake up. If you’re not patient, the caramel layer from the top of the cake won’t be hard enough, and, possibly, the plums will fall off the sponge cake.
