Notes

Cooking Tips:
  1. Choose fresh mackerel fillets: Fresh mackerel fillets have a delicate and mild flavor that pairs well with the tangy tomato sauce. Always choose the freshest mackerel fillets possible to ensure the best flavor and texture.
  2. Marinate the mackerel fillets in advance: Marinating the mackerel fillets in a mixture of herbs and spices before cooking will infuse them with extra flavor and tenderness.
  3. Use ripe and juicy tomatoes: The quality of the tomatoes used in the tomato sauce can significantly affect the taste of the dish. If you make the sauce at home, choose ripe and juicy tomatoes to make the sauce as flavorful as possible.
  4. Choose the right baking dish: To ensure that the mackerel fillets cook evenly and stay moist, choose a baking dish that is just the right size. Avoid using a dish that is too large, as this can cause the tomato sauce to evaporate too quickly and the fish to dry out. A dish that is too small, on the other hand, can lead to overcrowding and uneven cooking.
  5. Monitor the baking time: Be sure to keep an eye on the mackerel fillets as they bake in the oven to ensure they do not overcook. Overcooked mackerel can become dry and lose its delicate flavor and texture.

Final Notes for the Baked Mackerel Recipe

➡️ Mackerel is cooked in different ways – baking, grilling, and pan-frying are just the most common recipes for preparing mackerel. Whatever your cooking method, to check if the mackerel is ready for serving, you just need to make a cut in the thickest part of the fish – if it’s cooked, the meat should be tender but still firm and slightly opaque.

➡️ Many people don’t like mackerel because they say it’s not a meaty fish species. That’s true up to a point, but mackerel is still very tasty. As a result, a lot of simple fish recipes include mackerel. Still, there are available more refined mackerel recipes and the one shared on this page belongs to them. This baked mackerel recipe is delicious, so don’t hesitate to try it. Its savor comes both from tomato gravy and fresh dill flavor.

➡️ Mackerel is cooked usually whole or cut into fillets. Both versions are popular. Even if cutting fish into fillets requires some experience, the necessary skills can be learned quickly. I like cooking mackerel in any way. Sometimes I use fish as they are, and other times I cut out fillets from them. The choice belongs entirely to you and there is no wrong decision.

➡️ Some people think of the strong oily and fishy taste when it comes to mackerel. However, what should it taste like when fresh? For a really delicious taste of mackerels, you need to prepare them freshly. Most dark fishes lose their freshness quickly and take a strong taste that many people don’t like. So, to get the best results when cooking mackerel, use either very fresh or frozen fish.

➡️ Mackerel is a very healthy fish because it’s a very good source of vitamins and minerals. This fish is also particularly valuable for long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. This help to keep your heart healthy. As a result, people should include more fish in their diet, including more oily fish like mackerel.

➡️ Baked mackerel with tomato sauce goes very well with boiled rice, but you can eat it also with mashed potatoes or boiled pasta. Of course, you can try other side dishes as well.

➡️ On this page, I share a very easy baked fish recipe that can be prepared by people without extended cooking experience. Don’t be afraid if you did not cook fish until now, the recipe is really a breeze!
