The German mashed potato dish is a delicious and creamy side that complements any main course. The cooked potatoes are carefully mashed until they become smooth and creamy, a process that requires a lot of patience and attention to detail. Notes

Cooking Tips:
  1. When boiling the potatoes, ensure that they are cut into small, evenly-sized pieces to ensure they cook evenly.
  2. For even creamier mashed potatoes, warm up slightly the milk and butter in a separate saucepan before adding them to the mashed potatoes.
  3. When mixing the ingredients, avoid over-mixing as this can result in gluey potatoes.
  4. After mashing the potatoes with milk, butter, and sour cream, you can add a small amount of garlic powder and/or grated Parmesan cheese to the mixture and mix it until well combined for a more refined side dish.
  5. Remember to taste the mashed potatoes before serving and adjust the seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.

Final Notes for the German Mashed Potatoes Recipe

➡️ Mashed potatoes belong to the most appreciated food recipes on the planet. I like them as well and, therefore, I prepare them often as a side dish next to fried, roasted, or grilled meat of any type.

➡️ Despite its simplicity, this creamy mashed potatoes recipe is very popular and is prepared all over the world. In some countries, it’s known as “German mashed potatoes“, probably because there was made for the first time.

➡️ The quantity of milk and sour cream you can add to potatoes is different and depends mainly on the quantity of water from potatoes (this is different from one type of potato to another) and how creamy you want to make the potatoes. For the best results, I do recommend combining potatoes by hand for a more evident texture with very small potato pieces. Some make mashed potatoes with butter using a mixer, but when you prepare them this way, the final texture is very fine and can become gummy very easily.

➡️ Besides sour cream and butter, you can add other ingredients to flavor potatoes. Some of the most used aromas include raw or roasted garlic, fried onion, spring onion, parsley, dill, smoked cheese, and so on.

➡️ A very important thing when you make this potato recipe is to serve the side dish as soon as you can after you make it because a potato mash has the best taste when it’s warm.

➡️ As for the potato types used to make mashed potatoes, there are different opinions. Some say that potatoes with less water in the composition are better. I agree with them, but not all the time you have the perfect potatoes to make a side dish, isn’t it? So, I made potato mash with different potato types, red and white, and every time the food was great, so simply ignore people who say only a potato variety is good.

➡️ What is really important is to boil potatoes properly until they’re soft but not excessively because they soak up water very easily and this will affect the final consistency and texture.

➡️ However, baby potatoes, namely spring potatoes, are not suitable to make this recipe for mashed potatoes with sour cream and butter. Instead, I recommend you use baby potatoes to make buttered potatoes, home fries, oven-roasted potatoes, creamy dill potatoes, and so on.

➡️ Potatoes with sour cream and butter are at top of the most popular side dishes and can be served along with almost any main dish – roast pork, roast chicken, kebabs, schnitzel, and many more.

➡️ Some people ask me what to do with leftover potato mash. You can simply heat it up by following my simple trick: place the leftover mashed potatoes in a skillet and pour over very hot milk while mixing continuously until they are warm and creamy again.
