➡️ Despite its simplicity, this creamy mashed potatoes recipe is very popular and is prepared all over the world. In some countries, it’s known as “German mashed potatoes“, probably because there was made for the first time.
➡️ The quantity of milk and sour cream you can add to potatoes is different and depends mainly on the quantity of water from potatoes (this is different from one type of potato to another) and how creamy you want to make the potatoes. For the best results, I do recommend combining potatoes by hand for a more evident texture with very small potato pieces. Some make mashed potatoes with butter using a mixer, but when you prepare them this way, the final texture is very fine and can become gummy very easily.
➡️ Besides sour cream and butter, you can add other ingredients to flavor potatoes. Some of the most used aromas include raw or roasted garlic, fried onion, spring onion, parsley, dill, smoked cheese, and so on.
➡️ A very important thing when you make this potato recipe is to serve the side dish as soon as you can after you make it because a potato mash has the best taste when it’s warm.
➡️ As for the potato types used to make mashed potatoes, there are different opinions. Some say that potatoes with less water in the composition are better. I agree with them, but not all the time you have the perfect potatoes to make a side dish, isn’t it? ➡️ What is really important is to boil potatoes properly until they’re soft but not excessively because they soak up water very easily and this will affect the final consistency and texture.
➡️ However, baby potatoes, namely spring potatoes, are not suitable to make this recipe for mashed potatoes with sour cream and butter. Instead, I recommend you use baby potatoes to make buttered potatoes, home fries, oven-roasted potatoes, creamy dill potatoes, and so on.
➡️ Potatoes with sour cream and butter are at top of the most popular side dishes and can be served along with almost any main dish – roast pork, roast chicken, kebabs, schnitzel, and many more.
➡️ Some people ask me what to do with leftover potato mash. You can simply heat it up by following my simple trick: place the leftover mashed potatoes in a skillet and pour over very hot milk while mixing continuously until they are warm and creamy again.
