Raw Pork Butt

1) 2 kg/70 oz of pork neck (Boston butt)
2) 3-5 garlic cloves or to taste
3) 150 g/5 oz of green or yellow bell peppers
4) 200 g/7 oz of tomatoes
5) some salt and ground black pepper to taste
6) 3-5 thyme twigs or 1 tbsp of dried thyme
7) 300 ml/15 fl oz of water
8) 100 ml/3.5 fl oz of vegetable oil (optional)

Baked Pork Steaks in the Oven with Vegetables

step 1: cut the Boston butt into thick slices of about 2 fingers wide, then place the pork neck slices into the tray in a single layer
step 2: peel de garlic, cut it into rounds and place them over the pork neck slices
step 3: remove the stub and seeds from the bell pepper, cut them into strips, and place them over the pork neck slices
step 4: slice tomatoes and place them into the tray all over the pork slices
step 5: season ingredients with some salt and ground black pepper to taste
step 6: sprinkle fresh thyme twigs or dried thyme all over ingredients
step 7: pour about 300 ml or 10 fl oz of water into the tray
step 8: optionally, pour a bit of vegetable oil over ingredients in the tray for better roasting
step 9: cover the tray with aluminum foil and place it in the oven at 180 Celsius degrees or 360 Fahrenheit degrees for about 45 min
step 10: remove foil from the tray, then put it back in the oven at 230 Celsius degrees or 445 Fahrenheit degrees for about 30 min or until ingredients are golden

Cooking pork steaks in the oven is quite easy and doesn’t pose difficulties even to a less experienced chef. However, I share a few tips in order to avoid common mistakes that one could make when cooking pork neck steaks in the oven.

  • to get the best results when cooking baked pork steaks, I recommend you cut medium-thick slices because those too thin will dry out, while those too thick could remain raw and chewy inside
  • I prefer to cook this recipe with pork neck, but you can also use other pork cuts such as pork shoulder and pork loin
  • along with the mentioned vegetables, others can be used such as zucchini or eggplant
  • for a spicy taste, you can add one or two hot chili peppers among the chopped vegetables
  • for a more refined dinner, you can replace water with white wine
  • remove the foil from the tray only when the meat slices are soft enough, this way the baked pork steaks will definitely be tender and juicy
